This paper is prepared for the Basle meeting of the Governors of the Czech National Bank, National Bank of Hungary, Narodowy Bank Polski, National Bank of Slovakia and Bank of Slovenia in mid-May 2002. The country chapters were written by experts from the national central banks, while the editorial work was completed by experts from Narodowy Bank Polski. Authors tried to fit to the general outline allowing for cross-country comparisons, emphasizinig, at the same time, issues that are the most relevant for their countries specific situation.
