Successful launch of the SORBNET3 payment system
On 8 September 2025 Narodowy Bank Polski launched a new large-value payment system, SORBNET3, which has replaced the SORBNET2 system, operating since 2013. It is the culmination of several years of NBP work and preparations carried out in close and efficient cooperation with the Polish banking sector and operators of retail payment systems and securities settlement systems.
SORBNET3, the most important payment system in Poland, is a real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system processing payments resulting from monetary policy operations, interbank financial market transactions, large-value customer payments and payments cleared in retail payment systems. Reliability and effectiveness of the SORBNET3 system is essential for the stability of functioning of the domestic financial system.
SORBNET3 uses MX payment messages in the modern XML standard, compliant with the ISO 20022 standard. The new messages format ensures greater flexibility, wider range of transactions data and better interoperability among different payment systems. The launch of SORBNET3, based on the ISO 20022 standard, is a major change towards modernisation and evolution of the domestic payment infrastructure, in line with the global trends. At the same time, it substantially contributes to the increase in the efficiency and security of that infrastructure.
Besides NBP, 45 domestic commercial banks, KSKOK and ancillary system operators: Krajowa Izba Rozliczeniowa S.A., Krajowy Depozyt Papierów Wartościowych S.A., KDPW_CCP S.A. and Polski Standard Płatności S.A. participate in the SORBNET3 system.
The conditions and criteria for participation in the SORBNET3 system are set out in Resolution No. 19/2025 of the Management Board of Narodowy Bank Polski of 29 July 2025 on the implementation of “Terms and conditions of participation in the SORBNET3 system”.
