The Governor of NBP is appointed by the Sejm, at the request of the President of the Republic of Poland, for a term of six years. The NBP Governor is responsible for the organisation and functioning of Narodowy Bank Polski. The same person cannot serve as Governor of NBP for more than two terms of office.
The Governor of NBP:
- is the superior of all NBP staff,
- chairs the Monetary Policy Council and the NBP Management Board, and represents NBP in its external contacts,
- represents the interests of the Republic of Poland within international banking institutions, and also, insofar as the Council of Ministers does not resolve otherwise, within international financial institutions,
- in issuing regulations subject to publication and administrative rulings, the Governor of NBP is entitled to use a seal bearing the national emblem
