Issuing collector and commemorative coins is an occasion to commemorate important historic figures and anniversaries, as well as to develop the interest of the public in Polish culture, science and tradition. Collector coins are struck in gold and silver and are often decorated with the addition of elements made from other materials, e.g. amber, striped flint and glass, or with additional techniques, such as pad printing, UV printing, selective gilding, and laser matting. Collector coins are put into plastic capsules and placed in collector boxes with an attached certificate.

Commemorative coins in circulation standard and with a nominal value of 5 zł are made from MN25 (ring) and CuAl5Zn5Sn1 (core).

All collector and commemorative coins issued by NBP are legal tender in Poland. Their purchasing power is determined by the denomination inscribed on them. Regardless of the value of the denomination and the sale price set by NBP, collector coins have their own collectible value, which is determined by the numismatic market.

The NBP Regional Branches sell collector items to natural persons (individual customers) in the territory of Poland. The sale of collector items to legal persons is conducted by the NBP Regional Branches and the Cash and Issue Department of NBP at 11/21 Świętokrzyska Street, Warsaw.
