Dariusz Rosati was born in Radom on August 8, 1946. In 1969, he graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Trade of the Central School of Commerce (formerly the Central School of Planning and Statistics), and began work at the School as a junior lecturer. He received a doctorate in 1973 (with a thesis on decision-making theory), and the degree of doctor habilitatus in 1978 (with a thesis on foreign trade policy). In the years 1978-79, he worked as a consultant at Citibank, New York. In 1985-86 and 1987-88, he was associated with the Institute of the World Economy at the Central School of Commerce, which he helped found and subsequently headed as its Director. He spent the period 1986-87 at the University of Princeton in the USA as a Fulbright scholar. From 1988-91, Dariusz Rosati was Director of the Institute of Trade Cycles and Prices. In 1990, he became a professor of economics at the Central School of Commerce. From 1991-95, he worked at the UN Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva as head of the Section for East-Central European Countries. From December 1995 to October 1997, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Polish Republic. He currently continues to hold the post of professor at the Central School of Commerce.
From 1978 to 1991, Dariusz Rosati acted as a consultant for UNIDO, taking part in numerous missions to developing countries. In the years 1988-91, he also served on many occasions as an expert to the World Bank, the UN World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER), the International Labour Organisation and the Commission of the European Communities. He has lectured at various colleges and scientific or academic institutes in Europe and the USA.
In 1987-89, he was a member of the Commission for the Economic Reform. From November 1988 to June 1989, he sat on the Prime Minister’s team of civic economic advisers. From 1994 to 1997, he was a member of the Government Socio-Economic Strategy Council, and since 2002 he has worked as an adviser to the President of the European Commission.
Dariusz Rosati is the author of over 200 academic publications and press articles – in Polish, English, French, Russian and Hungarian – including four books. He has on three occasions been decorated for his academic achievements by the Minister of Science and Higher Education. He holds the Silver Cross of Merit (awarded in 1981), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1989), and the Medal of Honour of the Polish Students Association (1985). He was been decorated with an order of merit in France, Ukraine, Italy, Greece and Lithuania.
Dariusz Rosati is married with two children.
