Born in Łomża on 6 August 1949.

Graduate of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw. In 1983, he received a doctorate degree and in 1997 a postdoctoral degree (habilitation) at the Faculty of Management at the University of Warsaw. In 2011, he received the title of Professor of Economics. He completed internships at the University of Panama (1987), University of Edinburgh (1992), University of Glasgow (1994) and Le Moyne College in Syracuse, USA as a visiting professor (2002).

He has been an employee of the University of Warsaw since 1974 – since 2002 he has been head of the Department of Public Economy at the Faculty of Management of the University of Warsaw. He has also lectured at the Prof. Szczepan Pieniążek Higher School of Economics and Humanities in Skierniewice, the School of Banking and Insurance and the Real Estate University in Warsaw. In the years 1981-1985, he worked at the Central Statistical Office, from 1985 to 1989 he was employed at the Centre for Public Opinion Research, and in the years 1993-1996 in the Bureau of Research of the Chancellery of the Sejm. Member of the Committee on Economic Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Economic and Social Council at the Government Centre for Strategic Studies (1998-2006) and the National Development Council (2008-2010).

He is the author of books, academic textbooks and scientific papers on macroeconomics, statistics, economic and monetary policy.

Member of Parliament of the seventh and eighth term.

On 18 March 2016, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland appointed Prof. Jerzy Żyżyński to the Monetary Policy Council.
