The role of NBP in the Polish payment system

Narodowy Bank Polski ensures the efficient functioning of the payment system, facilitating the fast and secure monetary settlements between natural persons and business entities, as well as the conduct of interbank settlements.

The responsibilities of Narodowy Bank Polski in this area include, in particular:

  • organising and executing main monetary settlements,
  • conducting payment system oversight,
  • undertaking regulatory actions.

NBP is the operator of the wholesale payment systems SORBNET3 and TARGET-NBP, in which accounts of authorised financial institutions are maintained in Polish zloty and euro, respectively. NBP grants authorisations for the launch of new payment systems and for the introduction of changes to their operating rules, and assesses their performance. It also participates in the oversight of securities clearing and settlement systems. The governing bodies of NBP (the Governor of NBP and the NBP Management Board) issue legal acts concerning, inter alia, monetary settlements. NBP monitors and analyses the functioning of the payment system in Poland. The results of these analyses are presented in published materials and periodic reports.
