“The Independence March”, NBP’s silver collector coin

Narodowy Bank Polski is putting into circulation a silver coin dedicated to the idea of the greatest patriotic manifestation in Poland.

Narodowy Bank Polski has announced that the coin “The Independence March” will be available for sale from 20 October 2023.

The 10 zloty coin is made of 925 purity silver, has a diameter of 32.00 mm and weighs 14.14 g. Its mintage will be up to 10,000 pieces.

The main motif of the reverse of the coin are white-and-red flags and a white-and-red ribbon (both elements printed with the use of UV light). At the top, there is a semi-circular inscription: MARSZ NIEPODLEGŁOŚCI (The Independence March). On the obverse of the coin, against the background of symbolically depicted Polish flags, there is a centrally positioned image of the Eagle established as the national emblem of the Republic of Poland, as well as the face value, the year of issue and the inscription: RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA (Republic of Poland).

The Independence March is a cyclical event held on the 11th of November in Warsaw. The history of this patriotic manifestation dates back to the year 2010 when Poles were trying to unite around the Smoleńsk tragedy and its victims. An idea of organising a nationwide patriotic celebration arose among the national circles to honour the figures and events that led to the rebirth of Poland in 1918.

The Independence March has become the largest patriotic manifestation in Poland, reaching the steady turnout of over 100,000. In 2018, when Poland celebrated the 100th anniversary of regaining independence, over 250,000 Poles of all ages joined the march, coming with white-and-red flags. Polish President Andrzej Duda delivered an address at the start of the manifestation, and the march trailed the official one attended by the state authorities who walked to the National Stadium.

The silver coin “The Independence March” can be purchased at NBP Regional Branches and in the NBP online shop Kolekcjoner at the price of PLN 200.
